The Blacksmith

While on a family vacation a couple of years ago we spent a day at Calgary’s Heritage Park.  It’s a great place to take the kids with lots of historic displays and people in traditional clothing performing traditional duties.  This blacksmith was working in his shop showing the tourists his craft.  It was quite dark in the shop, but there was some beautiful soft light entering from the doorway and the window behind...

Burnt

I ordered some macro extension tubes a while ago and I haven’t had a chance to try them out.  That is until today.  I had some time but what to shoot?  There are so many fun things around the house that you can shoot with a macro lens but I wanted to try something fairly simple to get my feet...

Skull Ridge

For years I’ve explored this area east of Saskatoon by car and I always circle this ridge line wondering what the view was like from the top.  You can see the ridge in the background of this photo.  Anyway, on this occasion I stopped and talked to the farmer that owns the land and asked if I could jump the fence and hike to the top.  It was a good hike up the hill but what a view!  I spent some time just sitting and taking it all in without even taking a photo.  After a while I continued to explore and came across this...

Potter Rapids

From Nistowiak Falls we paddled over to Potter Rapids to check things out.  What a breathtaking area!  Potter Rapids is quite something to see.  Not the vertical drop like Nistowiak but wide – a few hundred meters across I’m sure.  There is a fishing camp on both sides of the rapids and we stopped in at the south one to view the rapids.  It was a really nice, clean camp that pretty much had everything put away and was ready for winter.  Click on the photo to see a larger...

Nistowiak Falls Panorama

On our canoe trip this fall we took a day trip to check out Nistowiak Falls.  I set up in the usual (horisontal) way to take a panorama but with the close quarters it was tough to get enough foreground and sky in the frame.  The solution…use vertical images.  I rotated the camera 90º to for portrait images.  This allowed me to get more foreground and sky in the fame.  The result is a panorama made from 7 vertical shots blended together in Photoshop.  What do you think?  Click on the image to see a larger...
